Folper : Melbourne Opera House

Folper : Folding as Performance Space, The Melbourne Opera House

The one thing that drives urban and economic growth in the cities of the future is creativity, imagination, experimentation and appreciation of difference – can all be found in the arts. The creative industries make an enormous contribution to Victoria’s knowledge economy. These industries model creative thinking, stimulate imagination and create a dynamic environment that is attractive to business, residents and tourists.

Despite all the built cultural capital assets, none of which was directed towards housing an Opera House within Melbourne. With funding for Opera Australia at the second highest (below orchestra and music) it is only essential that Melbourne establish its own Opera House, and to further strengthen the role of Melbourne as the leading innovative and creative city in Australia.

This project aims to explore the potential of giving the people more opportunity to experience the Melbourne arts scene, with its very own Melbourne Opera House, instead of the relying on the scattered venues.

Using folding as a generative process in architectural design as an experiment, to formulate the formal outcome of the Opera; a non-linear and bottom up approach to design.
