The Artistic Factory

An Exploration in Parametric Design
Adam Murray and Nogol Moshirian

This project is an exploration in the material system of folded straps and the effect of diagrams in the exploration of form.

It is also an example of how diagrams derived from programmes and contextual considerations can be inserted into a kinetic material system to produce architecture.

All three diagrams produce are embodied in this abstract reprresentation of data.

Taking a starting point of a uniform grid, we applied data to influence and deform to digital model to create a final form.
These deformations took place
A. On the facade.
B. In plan
C. In section
Data was translated into physical form through the use of diagrams.
Our project utilized a light generated diagram and two time based use diagrams
The light graphs were used to deform the facade in an abstract manner, to create variation in facade permeability.

The Intensity of Use diagram was an annual time based diagram. The usage percentages were used to transform the section profile.

The Type of Use diagram was an daily time based diagram. The types of usage were assigned values and used to transform the plan in the Y direction. Similar usages were assigned similar values from 1 to 10. The plan was then divided into 3 parts and deformed to in this manner.

All three diagrams produce are embodied in this abstract reprresentation of data.
