1. student : faiz akhbar

2. design for studio D : based on a sequence of paper folding, then digitized into a parametric skin using bentley's generative components

3. favourite designer : nicolas ghesquière for Balenciaga.

balenciaga spring 2008 collection designed by nicolas ghesquière challenges our conventional notions of proportion and shape. the undulating bell shapes of the shoulders and skirt were made possible using curvelinear topstitching and foam backing. the resultant silhouette is strong, unusual; almost shell-like, and gives structure to the body as opposed to the human body giving clothes its structure. i think it would be interesting to see this applied in a work of architecture - where the skin has its own independence and strength, and is able to give additional form to the structure. what i also find interesting is how the material changes in stiffness, from the extremely-stiff shell-like shoulders to a less-stiff drape along the back. the use of romantic floral patterns with state-of-the-art technique deserve mention too, one wonders if we can revitalize 'traditional' building materials using high-tech design and contruction methods.
