Project One : The Pavillion

By understanding the availability of natural, man-made, synthetic and hybrid fabrics and materials, we are able to grasp to coception of more recently developed smart textiles and their application.

Fashion design is no longer constrained within the confines of limited types of fabrics and how they are or can be used, but the making of it (be it in the production of materials, materials processing, material finishes, garment construction, etc.) has been widely expanded with the aid of technology.

What can be concluded as well is that with new technological discoveries, it is not to say that conventional methods that have been used in the past are to be neglected or overlooked. It is largely with the tried and tested techniques over time that will bring depth to current engineering marvels.

Technique: Seams + Shapes

Iteration 01 : Pleat and Fold

Iteration 02 : Volume with Seams

Iteration 02 : Detail

Dress by Rei Kawakubo for Comme des Garçons Spring/Summer 2009

We are interested in how fabric, which is inherently flat, can attain and maintain form. Techniques akin to common tailoring methods: seams, pleats and folds- were utilized to create desired shapes and volumes.

The garment chosen is by Rei Kawakubo, a puffy black dress that achieves its volume through its careful positioning of its seams. For the pavillion, we derived inspiration from the garment's construction. It was conceived as an extension of the garment into its surroundings.
