v3 week 2

introduction
Welcome to master of architecture studios C, D, and E. These studios are a 25-point studio based subject, consisting of 6 studio contact hours and up to one hour of lecture time per week.
diversity The subject consists of a series of individual and autonomous design studios.
Students will be introduced to the range of studios, the studio leaders and the studio content (intellectual agenda, site, program, etcetera) via the email prior to the first introductory session in week 1.

choice
At the first scheduled lecture session there will be a series of short presentations from each of the studio leaders. Students will then be asked to vote for their preferences for studio membership. All efforts will be made to get the students into their first or second preferences.
subject description
Students will undertake a series of studio-based exercises directed at and leading to the design of a complex project embracing a diverse range of economic, political and cultural issues. The project will need to demonstrate: awareness and responsiveness to the site and its greater context; a high resolution of the theoretical, programmatic, environment, and technical issues involved; and a high level of skill across graphic, verbal and written communication tasks.

studio membership
There will be 23 studio groups each consisting of approximately 15 students. After short presentations from each of studio leaders regarding the content of their studios, a ballot for studio membership will take place during our first meeting.

confirmation of studio membership, location of studio/tutorial space
On the afternoon of the day following the subject introduction session, the subject coordinator will send an email to both the students and the studio leaders, confirming: studio membership, times, and locations. Students and studio leaders will then meet in these nominated spaces on either Wednesday, Thursday or Friday for the first studio session.

studio/studio-leader meetings
Studio leaders will be available for 3 hours, twice a week – a total of 6 hours.

seminars
During the semester studio leaders may be presenting a series of seminars on related subject matter to assist in the successful completion of their studio. For this reason and the fact that all students within a given studio will be working on the same project attendance to the entire studio session and exposure to discussion of other students work will be of considerable benefit to all students. Do not allow a week to go by without getting some (even minimal) feedback from your
tutor.

studio projects and outcomes
Because of their autonomy all studio propositions, objectives, methodology, theories, sites, programs, and possible outcomes will vary. This diversity has been encouraged to enable students to select and focus on an area of interest and passion (refer to the individual handouts by studio leaders).

assessment and generic skills
To ensure parity of assessment across the variety of studios, a series of generic skills and assessment criteria have been developed. Please refer to the university handbook.

mastery
For these studios, mastery is considered to be a demonstration of the relationship of the student’s project to the broader discipline of architecture. This may be done through studies which relate the student’s specific project to similar work by others, both contemporary and historical, or to broader manifestations of theory and ideas, or to broader examples of technology and production. Each studio will guide this research in ways related to the needs of the studio and its students.

presentation and submission dates
While submission requirements and dates are generally the responsibility of the individual studio leader, to assist in some studio interaction there are three dates that require consistency across all studios. These are:
subject start Monday 2 March, 2009
first studios either Wednesday 4, Thursday 5 or Friday 6 of March, (depending on your studio allocation)
conceptual design submission, presentation and exhibition Thursday 9 April, 2009 (venue to be determined)
final submission and exhibition Friday 29 May 2009 (venue to be confirmed)
presentations and marking Studio times of week 13+1
MArch studios C, D, and E

subject introduction
Students should refer to individual studio outlines for other presentation and/or submission dates.
Please note that it is faculty policy to penalise late assignments. The only exception to this policy is when a medical certificate or councillor’s letter is provided. Attendance is expected at all seminars and studio sessions where contribution to discussion forms part of the program.
