2. fashion designer: Isabel Toledo
Isabel Toledo’s design patterns are deceptively simple and belie the complex folding. This packing dress consists of two circles of fabric, sewn together, with openings for head, arms, and legs. The dresses can be folded flat, but on the body they transform into organic shapes. So the two-dimensional shape of the object is vastly different from the form the objects assume when worn.
A garment will fall, wrap, or enclose the body in a particular way due to the gravity, so the original shape is invisible. I think it will be interesting to see: a structural framework in architecture that will carry the weight of a building but also allows for its fluidity; can the framework as simple as a single seam; and the relationship between its final voluminous form and the 2D geometry.
